Computer Maintenance

Some of the items covered during standard computer maintenance:

  • Indicate if current maintenance date is within the recommended window for this computer.  The window decreases as the computer gets older and more likely to have problems.
  • Where available, indicate the remaining manufacturer's warranty or time since warranty expired.
  • Evaluate operating system and support options
  • Evaluate physical condition of drive(s)
    • Format, capacity, errors logged, access time
  • Evaluate BIOS where available
  • Optional:
    • Additional spyware and malware scans
    • Registry tests
    • Privacy issues
  • Remove unneeded temporary files
  • Verify that antivirus software is installed, running and up to date
    •  If a full virus scan is not regularly run it will be run manually.
    •  Any problems identified will be addressed.
  • Verify that all of the appropriate patches have been applied. 
    • Standard maintenance includes Microsoft programs still supported by Microsoft
    • Adobe programs
    • Java. 
  • Verify that your backup program is running and producing backups as expected. 
  • If your computer has an uninteruptible power supply (battery backup) attached we will check the status of the unit and make recommendations regarding its condition and suitability for this computer.
