Intrusion Detection

Intrusion detection is the process of identifying foreign traffic on your network.  This may be due to an infection from a malicious program, an unknown computer on your wired or wireless network or it may be a malfunctioning or misconfigured program. 

Detection is different from but can work with a device that is protecting your network.  For instance, if the Intrusion Detection sensor detects traffic on your network that it has been trained to recognize, it can shut down network access to the computer that is generating and/or receiving the suspicious traffic.

Even if no malicious traffic is found, an intrusion detection system can also be used to monitor regular traffic and look for trends that would indicate that resources will need to be reallocated.
